On exteriors and new drywall, working painters almost never pick one or the other. One person sprays, a second follows 6-10 feet behind with a roller and drives the wet coat into the surface. Read this carefully. The spray bars are gun time — trigger pulled, paint moving. They do not include masking, and masking is where sprayed jobs lose their lead. A two-story exterior on a landscaped lot can absorb 8-12 crew hours of plastic, paper, and tape before a drop of paint is atomized. Rolling that same house needs drop cloths and about 3 hours.

Yes, and the honest answer is "more than you think." The number that matters is transfer efficiency: the share of atomized paint that lands on the surface and stays there. THE ESTIMATING MISTAKE
Most under-bid spray jobs come from one habit: the estimator prices material off the can's stated coverage (350-400 sq ft per gallon), then the crew sprays it. At 60% transfer efficiency that gallon is really covering about 220 sq ft. On a 4,800 sq ft two-coat exterior, that is five extra gallons nobody budgeted. Set your spray coverage assumption at 250-280 sq ft per gallon and the surprise goes away.
Spray AND Back-Roll: The Pro Standard
Back-rolling means following the sprayer immediately with a roller, into paint that is still wet, to work the coating into the surface. It is not a belt-and-suspenders habit — it is what makes a sprayed exterior last as long as a rolled one. THE TWO-PERSON CHOREOGRAPHY
The sprayer lays down a full wet coat one full siding course or one 8-foot wall section at a time. The back-roller follows into wet paint only — 6 to 10 feet behind on a warm day, further in cool weather. Once the film flashes off, rolling into it tears the surface and leaves roller tracks you cannot sand out. Use a 1/2" nap on lap siding, 3/4" on stucco and rough cedar, and 3/8" on new drywall.

SKIP THE BACK-ROLL
- -Smooth previously-painted hardboard or aluminum siding in good condition
- -Cabinet doors, interior doors, and trim — back-rolling ruins the finish you sprayed for
- -Ceilings that are already sealed and getting a straight recoat
- -Metal railings, fences, spindles, and lattice where a roller cannot reach anyway

WHAT THE NUMBERS ACTUALLY SAY
- Spray and back-roll saves 8 crew hours — about 6% of job cost. Not the 50% people expect. Masking ate six of the fourteen hours the gun saved on the body.

Air-assisted airless splits the difference: airless pressure drops to 400-800 psi and a small amount of shaping air softens the fan edge. You get near-HVLP atomization at roughly three times HVLP's output, which is why cabinet shops running volume own one. Expect $2,500-$5,000 as of 2026. If cabinets are an occasional add-on rather than a line of business, a good airless with a .410 fine-finish tip gets you 90% of the way there for a fraction of the money.
